Padmini owes her Asia title to Timoschenko
23 Jul 2008

Indias youngest and Orissa``s second Woman International Master (WIM) Padmini Rout returned home today after winning the gold medal in girls`` under-14 age group of the Asian Youth Chess Championship at Teheran on Monday last. Padmini gave credit to the tips she received from Ukranin Grandmaster Georgy Timoschenko in Bhubaneswar before the Asian meet. "I had finished fourth in this championship last year. But tips given by Timoschenko made a big difference this time. It also boosted my confidence," admitted Padmini. The city lass registered four wins and drew the remaining three games to top the table with 5.5 points. She started off on lacklustre note, drawing her first two games. But convincing wins in the last two rounds helped her bounce back in style. "I had a fever before I left for Teheran. It affected my performance in the firts two rounds. But according to Timoschenko``s advice I kept my cool and played confidently thereafter to overcome the early crisis``" explanied Padmini, who was greeted here at the Biju Patnaik by his father Dr Ashok Rout, friends and well-wishers.

Padmini said the presence of her mother Sasmita Dhal at Tehera also helped a lot. "She took care of my health and food, which was a major problem there. When I was lying low because of the first two drawn games, her pep-talk reinforced my spirit," recalled the 10th standard student of Chandrasekharpur DAV Public School, Bhubaneswar. Padmini described the victory over Vietnam opponent Nguyen Thimai Hung in the sixth round as the turning point of her campaign at Teheran. "She had beaten me three times in the past. So the win over her this time proved to be the turning point," observed the Orissa girl. This was the fifth international gold for Padmini, who earlier bagged the Asian under-12 girls`` title twice at Mumbai (2005) and Teheran (2006) and the Commonwealth girls`` under-14 gold as many times at Mumbai (2006) and New Delhi (2007). She said her next target would be focussed on doing well in the World Junior (under-20) championship scheduled to be held at Gaziantep, Turkey, from August 2 to 16. "Last year I finished 28th in the World Junior at Armenia but completed her third and final norm to become a WIM. This time, I am aiming to perform better and possibly gain my first International Master (IM) norm," she said. After the World Junior, petite Padmini would match her wit against the cream of the country in the Women``s National ``A`` (from Sept 2) and Open National ``B`` (from Sept 15) championships at New Delhi and Goa respectively. She will next compete in the Commonwealth Championship at Nagpur (Sept 28 to Oct 6) followed by the World Youth (under-14) Championship at Vietnam (Oct 19 to 29). Meanwhile, the busy chess schedule has forced Padmini to neglect her studies for the time being. "I will return to the study table in November and start preparation for the CBSE Board examination``" she signed off.
