  Manoj wins 3rd State chess title

Seasoned campaigner Manoj Kumar Panigrahi of Puri pipped defending champion Anwesh Upadhyaya on better progressive score (58.5-55) to win the title for the third time in the State Senior Chess Championship, which concluded at OUAT Campus in Bhubaneswar today. Progressive scores were applied in calculation after both the players tied for the top spot with nine points each from 11 rounds. In the last round, second seed Panigrahi drew with Biswajit Nayak, while Upadhyaya beat Rabindra Ojha.

 

Rourkela school boy Utkal Ranjan Sahu (8.5) and local favourite Soumya Ranjan Mishra (8) finished third and fourth respectively in the final standings. Mishra drew his last round game with Rajendra Sahu, while Utkal defeated Bibhuti Das. The top four finishers qualified to represent Orissa in the National ``B`` championship to be held Zambaluin, Goa from September 15 to 25.

  This was the third state senior title for Panigrahi, who pocketed the top prize of Rs 5,500, while runner-up Upadhyaya received Rs 4,000 at the closing function. Asian Youth under-14 girls`` champion Padmini Rout along with bronze medallists Debasis Das (boys`` u-18) and Sidhant Mohapatra (boys`` u-10) were felicitated on the occasion. Final standings (Top 10): 1. Manoj Kumar Panigrahi (9), 2. Anwesh Upadhyaya (9), 3. Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (8.5), 4. Soumya Ranjan Mishra (8), 5. Rajendra Kumar Sahu (8), 6. Rabindra Kumar Ojha (8), 7. Biswajeet Nayak (8), 8. Debasis Chakraborty (8), 9. Manas Ranjan Parida (8), 10. Arghya Arpan Parida (8).
