Believe it or not. India hopes to win a medal in the 3rd IBAF Women``s World Cup to be held at Matsuyama, Japan, from August 24 to 29, not withstanding the fact that the sport in the country is still in its infancy. An 18-member National team has been preparing seriously for the World Cup for nearly a month. ````The girls are working hard. They have started beating state-level men``s teams. The team seems capable of winning a medal in the World Cup,```` Amateur Baseball Federation of India (ABFI) secretary general P C Bhardwaj said on the sidelines of the second preparatory camp being conducted at the Ravenshaw University ground in Cuttack since July 21. Altogether eight teams will take part in the World Cup. Other seven countries include USA, Japan, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Canada, Hong Kong and Korea. India finished sixth in the 2004 Women``s World Cup in Japan. "Our women have bagged medals in the last two Asian Cup championships. They claimed a bronze in 1995 and bettered the achievement with a silver in 1999. I am confient, they can finish among the top three in the coming World Cup," said Harish Bharadwaj, the chief coach of the team. The preparation commenced with the first camp at Ludiana. After the end of the second camp at Cuttack on July 31, the last one will be held again at Jalandhar from August 10 till the departure of the team on August 22.

Giving a overall view of baseball in India, the ABFI secretary general said sport has been improving stadily since the formation of ABFI in 1983. ````The player base has reached 20,000 mark. As many as 25 states have been given affiliation so far. Among them, Goa, Manipur, Orissa and Punjab have proved as the top four sides, Bhardwaj said. "In women"s world rankings, featuring 108 countries, India stands among the top eight," he added. Bhardwaj admitted that baseball in India is lacking proper infrastructure facility, sponsorship and visibility in the media. "We have not made any serious effort to find sponsors and market the sport. We will do that only after attaining a good standard like other mainstream sports," he explained. The ABFI secretary general claimed that coaches from USA, South Korea and Japan were invited in regular intervals to prepare the National team. Major League Baseball (MLB) also has been sending coaches to conduct clinics in India since 2003. The second National camp was held in Orissa because the state has emerged as a strong force in recent times. Baseball is making news since Sibananda Pradhan took charge as the secretary of the Baseball Association of Orissa (BAO). Orissa women won the junior National championship at Cuttack in 2007 and went on to annex the senior National title at Maduria this year. According to Pradhan, the player-base of the state has reached 3,000. Pradhan, however, regretted that BAO is not getting any support from the State Government for the promotion of baseball.
