Thakur replaces Rijiju as Union Sports Minister
07 Jul 2021

Anurag Thakur was today appointed as the new Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports in the Government of India. He replaced Kiren Rijiju, 16 days before Tokyo Olympic Games. Bengal BJP leader Nisith Pramanik was also appointed as the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports. At the age of 35, Pramanik became the youngest minister in the cabinet.

Meanwhile Rijiju was appointed as the new Minister of Law and Justice, replacing Ravi Shankar Prasad. Rijiju had successed Olympic silver-medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore as the Minister of State for Sports in May 2019.

In the latest cabinet reshuffle, Thakur was given charge of sports along with the Information and Broadcasting ministry after he took oath as a cabinet minister.

Besides being appointed as Minister of State for Sports, under Thakur, Pramanik has been given the additional charge as Minister of State for Home Affairs. He is serving as his first term as Member of Parliament after winning from Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat in 2019.

Thakur is a four time elected Member of the Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. He earlier held the charge of Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs under Nirmala Sitharaman from 31st May 2019 till 7th July, 2021.

Thakur was the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) between May 2016 and February 2017. Before that, he was the secretary of the Board and also headed the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). His brother Arun Dhumal is currently the treasurer of the BCCI.

Thakur began his political career in 2008 as he succeeded his father, Prem Kumar Dhumal, as Member of Parliament in 14th Lok Sabha from Hamirpur constituency. Since then, he has been re-elected thrice from the same seat.

While serving as the Minister of State for Finance, Thakur created a controversy for his alleged slogan “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maro salon ko’’ in an election rally in Delhi last year. A video showing Thakur chanting the slogan went viral on social media in the aftermath of Citizenship Amendment Act.
