Mirabai makes India proud with Olympic silver medal
24 Jul 2021

Manipur weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu made India proud by winning the first medal for the country on the first day of the Tokyo Olympic Games today. She won the silver medal in women 49 kg class, lifting 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 202 kg.

The medal made Mirabai the second Indian woman after PV Sindhu to win an Olympic silver and the second Indian weightlifter, after a bronze by Karnam Malleswari in 2000 Sydney Olympics, to stand on the podium at the Games. Hou Zhihui of China won the gold with a total lift of 210 kg, which included 94 kg in snatch and 116 kg in clean & jerk. She also created three new Olympic records in the process.

Besides weightlifting, India put up good performance in mens hockey, tennis and womens table tennis. But in archery, shooting, boxing, women hockey and rowing, the display of the country proved to be disappointing.

ARCHERY: Indian archery pair of Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav went down to mighty South Korea 2-6 in quarterfinals in mixed team event. Deepika and Pravin advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Taipei 5-3 in the first round earlier in the day.

BADMINTON: Indian mens doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made an amazing comeback to get the better of Taipei duo 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 in their 1st group league match. But in mens singles, B Sai Praneeth was stunned by Mishra Zilberman (Israel) 21-17, 21-15 in his opening group league match.

BOXING: In boxing, former World championships bronze medallist Vikas Krishan crashed out in the first round on his third Olympic appearance, losing to Japanese opponent Sewonretes Okazawa 5-0 in mens 69kg contest at the Kokugikan Arena.

HOCKEY: Indian men hockey team, featuring Odisha defenders Birendra Lakra and Amit Rohidas, came from behind to beat New Zealand 3-1 in their opening Group-A match at the Oi Seaside Park. Harmanpreet Singh was the star of the Indian win, converting two penalty corners in the 26th and 33rd minutes.

New Zealand took the lead early in the 6th minute with Kane Russell converting a penalty corner. But Rupinder Pal Singh equalized for India when he scored off a penalty stroke in the 10th minute. After trailing 1-3, New Zealand scored their second goal in the 43rd minute through Stephen Jenness.

But the high-flhying Indian women hockey team suffered a huge setback as they lost to three-time Olympic gold medalist and World champion Netherlands 1-5 in their first Group-A match, conceding four goals in the second half. Maria Verschoor (6-FG), Margot van Geffen (33-PC), Felice Albers (43-FC), Frederique Matla (45-FG) and Caia van Maasakker (52-PC) scored the five goals for Netherlands, while lone goal for India was scored by captain Rani Rampal (10-FG).

JUDO: Sushila Devi, the lone entry for India in judo, went down to London 2012 bronze medallist and WR 24 Eva Csernoviczki of Hungary in first round of the 48 kg class. She, of course, had a chance to be in fray via Repechage if the Hungarian judoka reached final. But that did not happen.

ROWING: Indian duo of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh failed to qualify for the semifinal A/B after finishing fifth in mens lightweight double scull heat at Sea Forest Waterway. However, they managed to move into repechage round with a time of 6:40.33.

SHOOTING: Saurabh Chaudhary finished 7th in the final of the mens 10m air pistol event with 137.4 points. Earlier in the qualification round, Chaudhary emerged on top with 586 points. But his compatriot Abhishek Verma was eliminated in the qualification round, finishing 17th.

Indian women shooters Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela also disappointed the country as they failed to advance to the final in 10m air rifle event. In the qualification round, Elavenil finished 16th, while Apurvi ended 36th.

TABLE TENNIS: Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee posted contrasting wins in respective opening round contest of the women singles event. Batra beat Tin Tin Ho (GBR) 4-0, while Mukherjee came back from 1-3 down to beat higher ranked Linda Bergstrom (Sweden) 4-3. But in mixed doubles, Indian pair of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra bowed out in the first round, losing to World No 1 combination of Lin Yun Ju and Cheng I Ching (TPE) 0-4.

TENNIS: Sumit Nagal fought his way to mens singles 2nd round with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 win against WR 197 Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the 1st round. Qualifying for the Games just a few days before due to pullout of higher ranked players, Nagal also became the third Indian tennis player after Zeeshan Ali (Seoul 1988) and Leander Paes (Atlanta 1996) to win a singles match in the Olympic Games. He will next meet World No 2 Daniil Medvedev.
