  Dubai Para Badminton Intl: Bhagat, Bisoyee win 4 medals

Odisha shuttlers Pramod Bhagat and Deep Ranjan Bisoyee won a total four medals in the 3rd Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International, which concluded at Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club in Dubai, UAE today. Bhagat justified his reputation as Men SL3 World No 1, capturing two gold today and one bronze yesterday, while Bisoyee claimed one bronze yesterday.

Bhagat bagged the singles gold, which was the 17th of his career, in the SL3 category after defeating compatriot Nitesh Kumar 21-17, 21-18 in the final. Bhagat then paired up with Manoj Sarkar to clinch the doubles gold in SL3-SL4 category by beating Indian counterparts Sukant Kadam and Nitesh Kumar 21-18, 21-16. Earlier, Bhagat won the bronze in mixed doubles, pairing up with Palak Kohli. He won a medal in every category that he took part.

Bhagat, who is among seven para-badminton players in the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme, said, “During COVID time, SAI and TOPS helped me a lot, they provided me a mini-gym which helped me maintain my fitness, the result of which was visible today. I was fit that is why I was able to perform well.’’

 

Bisoyee pocketed the bronze medal in men SL3-SL4 doubles category after losing to eventual champions Pramaod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar in the semifinals. Three para-shuttlers from Odisha vied for honours in the Dubai International tournament. Gadela Dillaswar Rao was the other Odisha player, who participated men SL3 singles and SL3-SL 4 doubles with partner Prakash Adhikari of Nepal, but bowed out from the league stage.
