  Pramod on course for multiple Paralympic medals

Odisha para-badminton star Pramod Bhagat stayed on course for multiple medals at the Tokyo Paralympics, storming into semifinals in both mens singles SL3 and mixed doubles SL3-SU6 categories with Palak Kohli as his mixed doubles partner.

Taking to Court 3 of the Yoyogi Stadium, Palak and Pramod essayed a sensational win against the Thai duo of Teamarrom Siripong and Saensupa Nipada in straight games, 21-15, 21-19 in just a minute shy of the half an hour mark.

Tomorrow, Pramod will playing his singles semifinal against Daisuke Fujihara of Japan and then join with Palak for their mixed-doubles semifinals against Hary Susanto and Oktila Ratri of Indonesia. Singles final match also is scheduled for tomorrow.

Earlier, Pramod Bhagat stormed into mens singles SL3 semifinals, beating Oleksandr Chyrkov of Ukraine 21-12, 21-9 in his second and last Group-A league match on September 2. Bhagat started his Tokyo Paralympics campaign on September 1 with mixed luck, winning his opening mens singles SL3 match in Group-A and losing the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 match in Group-B with Palak Kohli as partner. Badminton is making its debut at the Summer Paralympic Games.

 

Bhagat first played the mixed doubles match, which turned out to be a thrilling one against Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel of France. After losing the first game 9-21, the Indian duo fought back to draw level, winning the second game 21-15. But the French pair won the third and deciding game 21-19 in 19 minutes to clinch a hard-earned success.

In his opening singles match, World No 1 Bhagat overcame compatriot and former doubles partner Manoj Sarkar 2-1 in 56 minutes. The 33-year-old Odisha shuttler started the match in a dominating fashion, pocketing the first game 21-10 in just 14 minutes.

But World No 3 Sarkar bounced back into the match as he won the second game 23-21 to the take the match to the wire. However, in the final game, Sarkar ran out of steam and lost 9-21. Bhagat will play his next singles match against Oleksandr Chyrkov of Ukraine tomorrow and a win will carry him to the semifinals.
