  Athletics: Swadhin, Kishore create New State Records

Cuttack athletes Swadhin Kumar Majhi and Kishore Kumar Jena won one gold medal each with New State Record in mens high jump and javelin throw respectively on the opening day of the 68th Odisha State Senior Athletics Championship at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today.

Majhi created established the New State Record, clearing a height of 2.07 metre. He shattered the 25-year-old previous record of 2.06 metre, held by Sunil Kumar Azad, who had achieved it at Kolkata in 1996.

Jena, en exmployee of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) broke his own State Record, throwing the spear to a distance of 76.41 metre. In the process, he bettered his previous record of 72.77 metre, achieved at Cuttack in 2017 and pocketed the gold medal.

 

The opening day also produced two New Meet Records. Ashok Dandasena of Odisha Police scripted a New Meet Record while winning gold medal in mens 1500 metre run. He clocked 3 minute 58.7 seconds and eclipsed his previous record of 3:57.2.

Bighnaraj Miridia, also from Odisha Police, established the other New Meet Record in the semifinals of the mens 400 etre run with a time of 48.26 seconds. Previous record in this event was 48.31 seconds.

More than 400 athletes are competing in 34 track and field events of two-day State Championship, which is being organised jointly by Sports and Youth Services Department, Govt of Odisha; KIIT University and Odisha Athletics Association.

Athletes attaining the qualifying mark, fixed by Athletics Federation of India, will be eligible to represent Odisha in the 60th National Open Athletics Championship, scheduled to be held in Warangal, Telangana from 15 to 19 September 2021.
