Sindhu bags bronze; Men hockey team thru to SFs
01 Aug 2021

Indian badminton icon P V Sindhu and the men hockey team created history by winning women singles bronze medal and reaching semifinals at the Tokyo Olympics today. Sindhu played aggressive badminton to beat He Bing Jiao 21-13, 21-15 in the third-place match at the Musashino Forest Plaza in Tokyo.

This was the second bronze medal for Sindhu, who became the first Indian woman to win back-to-back medals at the Olympic Games. She had secured her first Olympic medal with a silver at the 2016 Rio Games. Sindhu also became the fourth women singles player to win medals at two successive Olympics.

The men hockey team entered Olympic semifinals after a gap of 49 years, trouncing Great Britain 3-1 in the last quarterfinal match at the Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo. Dilpreet Singh (7-FG), Gurjant Singh (16-FG) and Hardik Singh (57-FG) scored the three goals for India, while the lone goal for Great Britain was scored by Samuel Ward (45-PC).

With this win, India inched closer to an Olympic medal after 41 years. India will take on World champions Belgium in the semifinals on 3 August 2021 at 7.00 am (IST). India had won their last medal with the gold at the Mosco Olympics in 1980.

But the hockey competition in Mosco Olympics was conducted on league format with six contries in the fray. There was no semifinal and after the completion of the league matches, top two teams _ Spain and India _ directly qualified for the final, where India won 4-3.

Indian men hockey team reached Olympic semifinals last time in the 1972 Munich Games after emerging toppers in Group-B league. In the semifinals, India lost to Pakistan 0-2, but bagged the bronze medal, defeating Netherlands 2-1 in the third-place match.

The day at Tokyo Olympics today, however, started with a heartbreak for India as super heavyweight boxer Satish Kumar bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing to World champion and top seed Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan 0-5. Satish, however, won the hearts for his courage and never-say-die attitude. He entered in the ring with seven stitches and fought bravely before losing to a better boxer. His courage also earned him respect from his opponent.
