Men win hockey bronze; Dahiya settles for silver
05 Aug 2021

Long cherished dream of Odisha was fulfilled today as Indian men hockey team defenders Amit Rohidas and Birendra Lakra became the first Olympic medal winners of the state. The Indian team won the bronze medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, defeating Germany 5-4 in the nerve-wracking match for the third place at Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo.

The historic bronze was the first Olympic hockey medal that India won after a gap of 41 years and 12th overall in the sport. India had bagged its last Olympic hockey medal at the 1980 Moscow Games with the National men team capturing gold.

Trailing 1-3 at one stage, India scored four goals in space of eight minutes to clinch a sensational win over Germany. Simranjeet Singh was the top scorer for India with two goals (17-FG, 34-FG) to his name. Incidentally, Simranjeet scored the first and last goal for his team.

Other three goals for India were scored by Hardik Singh (27-PC), Harmanpreet Singh (29-PC) and Rupinder Pal Singh (31-PS). Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and defender Amit Rohidas also played important roles in the India win, saving a number of penalty corners. Timur Oruz (2-FG), Niklas Wellen (24-FG), Benedikt Furk (25-FG) and Lukas Windfeder (48-PC) sounded the board once each for Germany.

Belgium won the gold medal, defeating Australia 3-2 in shoot out, which was applied after the play in regulation time of the final match ended in 1-1 draw. Belgium drag-flick specialist Alexander Hendrickx became the top goal scorer of the tournament with 14 goals. Harmanpreet Singh (India) and Tom Wickham (Australia) finished as joint third highest scorers with six goals each.

The day proved to be most successful for India at the Tokyo Olympics, fetching two medals. Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya settled for silver medal after losing to
4-7 to World champion Zaur Uguev of Russia in the hard-fought mens 57kg freestyle final. Two-time Asian champion Dahiya became only the second Indian wrestler, after Sushil Kumar, to win a silver in Olympic Games.

But India suffered two setbacks in the wrestling arena with Deepak Punia and Vinesh Phogat ending respective campaigns without a medal. World silver medallist Punia went down fighting to Myles Amine of San Marino 4-2 in an 86kg bronze medal match. In women 53kg contest, Phogat started her campaign with a 7-1 win over Sofia Mattsson of Sweden. But she bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing 3-9 to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus.
