  Odisha weightlifters bag 9 National medals

Odisha players bagged a total of nine medals in the 73rd Senior Men, 36th Senior Women, 57th Junior Men, 33rd Junior Women and 16th Youth (Sub-Junior) Boys and Girls) National Weightlifting Championships, which were held simultaneously at Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) Patiala from August 9 to 12.

The nine medals featured one gold, three silver and five bronze. Sneha Soren of Mayurbhanj alone won three medals, including one gold. She emerged best lifter with gold medal in junior women 55kg category, lifting 75kg in snatch and 100kg in clean & jerk for a total of 175kg. Sneha also captured silver medal in the inter-state competition and bronze in senior women category.

In youth girls 76kg category, Monali Sahu claimed bronze medal with 64kg in snatch and 79kg in clean & jerk for a total of 143kg. Punit Sahu captured silver medal in youth men 96kg class with a total lift of 258kg which featured 103kg in snatch and 155kg in clean & jerk.

 

Kuldip Sahu secured bronze medal in youth men 67kg class, lifting 108kg in snatch and 130kg in clean & jerk for a total of 238kg. Mihirkanta Sethi won silver medal in senior men 73kg inter-state competition with 130kg in snatch and 160kg in clean & jerk for a total of 290kg.

Muna Nayak bagged bronze medal in senior men 55kg class, lifting 104kg in snatch and 131kg in clean & jerk for a total lift of 235kg. However, Jhilli Dalabehera, the most decorated lifter of the state recent years, settled for bronze medal in senior women 45kg category. She, of course, represented her employers Indian Railways, instead of Odisha.

According to media report, a total of 22 lifters represented Odisha in the National championships. But none of the nine lifters from Tenvic-Odisha Weightlifting High Performance Centre, was able to win a medal despite being in regular training, even during the lockdown.

The lifters of the HPC were: Mukesh Wika (Youth boys 55kg), Nandan Kumar Sahu (81kg), Sadananda Bariha (Youth boys 59kg), Prabhat Jhodia (Youth boys 67kg), Rajendra Muduli (Junior men 61kg), Swetalina Nayak (Junior women 81kg), Sangeeta Padhi (Youth & Junior 64kg), Mina Santa (Youth girls 55kg), Sambari Samad (Youth girls 64kg).
