Officials make up players absence in Olympics
12 Aug 2008

No sportsperson from Orissa has qualified to represent India in the ongoing Beijing Olympic Games. In the absence of players, four officials are continueing the presence of the state in the Games. Three of them are already in the Chinese capital and the fourth member is set join soon.

Since 1996 Atlanta Olympics, hockey players in general and Dilip Tirkey in particular have given Orissa a regular presence in the Games. With Indian hockey team failing to qualify for the first time in 80 years, Orissa has suffered the most. Woman rower Pravasini Dwivedy had some hope, but it was washed out in the qualifying competition earlier at Shanghai. Among the four officials, Brig Kamakshya Prasad Singh Deo is in Beijing as the Technical Committee chairman for the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be hosted by India in New Delhi. Brig Singh Deo, who is also the president of the Rowing Federation of India (RFI), was followed by State Urban Development Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and his wife Sangita Singh Deo. An Executive Committee member of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Kanak Vardhan is also the president of Orissa Basketball Association and Orissa State Karate-do Association. Lok Sabha Member Sangita Singh Deo is representing the country as the Chairperson of IOA``s Women``s Commission. She also happens to be the president of Orissa Association of Rowing & Sculling (OARS). RFI vice-president Bindod Dash is set to leave for Beijing as the fourth Olympic official from Orissa. Dash, who is also the secretary of OARS, said his role in Beijing will feature watching different aspects of the rowing competition, including technical and organisational, and use it for the development of rowing in India.
