  Vijender settles for boxing bronze
22 Aug 2008

Vijender Kumar``s bid for a historic boxing gold medal ended in heartbreak Beijing today when he lost in the semifinals to settle for the bronze as India completed their Olympic campaign with a record haul of three medals. The 22-year-old Vijender lost his bout in the 75 kg category against Cuba``s Emilio Correa Bayeaux by a margin of three points (8-5). The Bhiwani boxer will, however, have the consolation of being India``s first bronze medal winner in the boxing event having punched his way to the semi-finals. There was more disheartning news in store for the Indians in the evening as the the women``s 4x400 relay team comprising S Geetha, Manjit Kaur, Chitra K Soman and Mandeep Kaur finished seventh in the heats, thus failing to qualify for the finals.

Bolt completes golden treble: Sprint sensation Usain Bolt etched his name in the Olympic record books by completing a golden treble as he powered the Jamaican relay team to the gold medal while Ehiopian Tirunesh Dibaba claimed an unprecedented long distance double by winning the women``s 5000m event today. The 22-year-old Bolt, who had set the track ablaze by winning the 100m and 200M Sprint titles earlier, added a third gold to his kitty as the Jamaicans took the honour in the men``s 4X100m relay event with a world record timing of 37.10 sec. There was no American representation in the relay events after both the men``s and women``s teams botched baton handovers in the heats, marking a nightmarish campaign for the formidable US track and field team. Bolt earlier became the first athlete in 24 years to win the gold in 100m and 200m events. With his teammates Nesta Carter, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell living upto expectations, the Jamaicans bettered the previous world record of 37.40 sec. But the Jamaican women``s relay team, billed as the favourites, quite shockingly dropped the baton to fritter away a definite chance of a medal.
