  National Para Athletics: Odisha bag 4 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze

Riding on a golden treble by woman sprint ace Jayanti Behera and a gold with National record by Suchitra Parida, Odisha bagged a total of nine medals in the 22nd National Para Athletics Championships, which concluded at the SAG Athletic Stadium in Bambolim, Panaji, Goa today.

The nine medals include four gold, four silver and one bronze. Jayanti clinched the glorious treble womens T-47 category, winning one gold medal each in 100m, 200m and 400m run. She was also awarded as the Best Woman Athlete of the six-day championships.

Odisha woman javelin thrower Suchitra Parida not only secured the gold medal, but also created a New National Record, hurling the spear to a distance of 16.99 metres in F-55 category. She erased the previous National record of 14.73 metre, held by Sakhi Kasana.

Out of the four silver medals, visually impaired cricket international and para athlete Pankaj Bhue secured two, finishing second in mens 100 metre run and long jump. The other silver medals were claimed by Kamala Kanta Nayak in mens javelin throw and Kunilata Barik in womens 100m wheelchair run.

 

Gumda Barla claimed the lone bronze medal for Odisha in mens 5000m wheelchair run. Para Sports Association of Odisha (PSAO) has fielded a 29-member State squad in this National championship.

The squad features 24 male and six female athletes. Two coaches, one manager, one guide runner and five assistants and three officials have accompanied the Odisha squad.
