  Hockey Mens Pro League: India end home leg with a win

India completed their eight-match home engagements on a winning note, trouncing Ireland 4-0 in their last match of the 5th FIH Mens Hockey Pro League at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela today. This was the third outright win for India, who moved up to the third place in the league table with 15 points.

India won two matches in shootout to get one bonus point eacj, but lost one match outright and two in shootouts. Led by drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh, India played four matches each at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar and Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Rourkela.

Indian men team will now embark on a Europe tour to play their remaining eight matches in May-June 2024. Of the eight matches, four will be held in Antwerp, Belgium between May 22 to 26 and the other four in London, Great Britain between June 1 to 9.

 

Hockey India has fielded a 24-member mens team for the Hockey Pro League 2023-24 season. Defender Amit Rohidas is the only player from Odisha to have found a berth in the Indian team.

Indian mens team has been playing Hockey Pro League since the season 2020-21. They have won just one bronze medal in the history of the Pro League by finishing third in the 2020-21 season.

*     India captain Harmanpreet Singh completed his 200th international cap during their first-leg match against Netherlands in Bhubaneswar on February 11.
*     India forward Gurjant Singh completed his 100th international cap during their first-leg match against Netherlands in Bhubaneswar on February 11.
*     India midfielder Manpreet Singh completed his 350th international cap during their first-leg match against Spain in Bhubaneswar on February 10.

Shoot-out: India (Shamsher Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, Sukhjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh) beat Netherlands (Koen Bijen, Thierry Brinkman) 4-2. PoM: Hardik Singh.

24 February 2024 (At Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Rourkela): India (Harmanpreet Singh 20-PC, Amit Rohidas 29-PC) drew with Australia (Blake Govers 23-PS, Tom Craig 53-FG) 2-2. Shootout: India lost to Australia (Tim Brand, Flynn Ogilvie, Tom Wickham) 0-3. PoM: Johan Durst (Australia).
