  KIUG 2023: Odisha swimmers, lifters, rugby players shine

Swimmers of Odisha or having a link with the State ended their campaign on a highly successful note, bagging a total 14 medals at the 4th Khelo India University Games at Dr Zakir Hussain Aquatics Complex in Guwahati on 22 February 2024. The 14 medals featured nine gold, four silver and one bronze.

With KIIT Deemed to be University winning one gold and two silver, the overall total of Odisha athletes became 17. KIIT weightlifters Sneha Soren and Punit Chandra Sahu pocketed one gold and one silver respectively, while the other silver was captured by their mens rugby seven team.

Utkal University flag-bearer Pratyasa Ray was most successful among the Odisha swimmers, capturing four gold, one silver and one bronze. She was followed by Shubhrant Patra, who garnered three gold and one silver Jain University, Bangalore. A native of Silk City, Berhampur, Shubhrant studies and trains in Bangalore.

 

Shristi Upadhaya of Odisha IIS Swimming HPC, Bhubaneswar, also achieved outstanding success, claiming two gold and two silver medal for Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She celebrated her birthday with two gold medals on February 21. Both Shubhrant and Shristi have the reputation of winning multiple medals in Odisha State swimming championships and representing the State in the National championships.

Odisha international lifter Sneha Soren secured the one gold medal in women 55kg category, while Punit secured the silver in mens 102kg class at Rajiv Gandhi University in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
