  Tennis: Odisha trio Sohini, Aahan, Aditya triumph

Odisha tennis players, Sohini Mohanty Aahan and Aditya Satpathy, maintained their run of success by winning ITF and AITA junior tournaments at different places in the country this week. Junior international Sohini Mohanty won the girls doubles title at the Delhi November Juniors (J60) International Tournament at R K Khanna Tennis Stadium in New Delhi yesterday.

Odisha girl Aradhyaa Verma also featured in the girls doubles final and finished runners-up. In the lop-sided final, Sohini and her Indian partner Rishitha Basireddy beat Aradhyaa and Aishi Bisht (India) 6-1, 6-1. In girls singles, Sohini reached semifinals before losing to Indian opponent Aishi Bisht 4-6, 2-6.

 

This was the second ITF junior doubles title within a month for Sohini, who claimed the earlier one at J60 Junior International Tournament in Guwahati on November 25. In the final Sohini and her Indian partner Rishitha Basireddy beat India-USA pair, Ishi Maheshwari and Priyanka Rana 6-2, 6-3. Sohini missed out on a double crown in Guwahati as she finished singles runner-up, going down to Rishitha Basireddy 3-6, 0-6.

Aahan clinched a double crown by emerging champion in girls singles and doubles events at the All India National Series U-14 Tournament, which concluded in Shamirpet, Secunderabad today. In the singles final, she defeated Deepsikha Vinayagamurthi (Tamil Nadu) 6-2, 6-2.

Bhubaneswar girl Aahan claimed the doubles title with Karnataka partner Karthik Padmakumar. They prevailed over Karnataka-Telangana combination of Aahida Singh and Sanvi Reddy Vundyala in the summit clash 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Odisha achieved another success with Aditya Satpathy emerging doubles champion at the MOSF Gurukul AITA-OTA Mens 1 Lakh Tennis Tournament, which concluded at Gurukul Resorts and Country Club, Mendhasal, near Bhubaneswar on December 1. Partnering with Shaurya Manik of Chhattisgarh, Satpathy won the final against Maharashtra pair of Nirav Shetty and Azmer Shaik 6-2, 7-6 (4).
