Womens Hockey Asia Cup: India settle for silver medal
14 Sep 2025

India settled for the silver medal in the 11th Womens Asia Cup Hockey Tournament after losing to host China 1-4 in the final at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Hockey Field in Hangzhou, China today. After taking the lead through Navneet Kaur in the very first minute, the Indians made a meek surrender to suffer a crushing defeat.

Besides bagging the gold medal, China secured a direct berth in the FIH Womens World Cup 2026 to be held in Belgium and Netherlands. Japan won the Asia Cup bronze medal, defeating South Korea 2-1 in the 3rd/4th-place match.

This was the third silver and eighth medal for India in the Womens Asia Cup since the tournament started in 1985. Earlier, India won two gold (2004 and 2017), two silver (1999 and 2009) and three bronze (1993, 2013, 2022) medals in this quadrennial tournament.

China and India qualified for the 11th edition of the Asia Cup final by securing the top two places in the Super-4 league table with nine and four points respectively. China won all three of their Super-4 matches, while India won one, lost one and drew one. India beat Korea 4-2, lost to China 1-4 and held Japan to a 1-1 draw.

India sealed their place in the Super 4s, emerging Pool-B toppers with two wins and one draw, They garnered a total of seven points with a goal difference of +23. Japan also secured seven points from three games, but finished second in the pool behind India with a goal difference of +15.

Earlier in the pool league, India trounced Thailand 11-0, Singapore 12-0 and drew with Japan 2-2. Salima Tete led the 20-member Indian women hockey team, which featured Sunelita Toppo as the only player from Odisha.

The inclusion of only one Odisha player in the Indian team raised eyebrows as the State is touted as the hockey capital of India with the Odisha Government funding National hockey teams as their main sponsor and hosting major international tournaments for nearly a decade.

As many as six players from Odisha were in the list of 40 core probables for the Senior Women National Coaching Camp, which was held at SAI Centre, Bengaluru from 21 July to 29 August 2025. Among them only Sunelita was selected in the final squad. Other five players in the National camp were: Madhuri Kindo, Sujata Kujur, Jyoti Chhatri, Ajmina Kujur and Dipi Monika Toppo.
