Odisha duo Sambid, Loma set to compete at Deaflympics 2025
15 Nov 2025

Odisha judoka Sambid Das and karateka Loma Swain are all set to represent India at the 25th Summer Deaflympics, which commenced in Tokyo Japan today. Balasore judoka Sambid will compete in below 73kg individual and team events from November 16 to 18. Paradip karateka Loma will battle it out in female 50kg kata and kumite from November 23 to 25.

Sambit has the reputation of winning one bronze medal at the 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games, held in Kualalumpur, Malaysia from 1 to 8 December 202. The 21-year judoka, who trains in Bhubaneswar, under woman judo coach Gitanjali Panda, qualified for the Summer Summer Deaflympics by winning the gold medal in below 73kg category at the 27th Senior National Deaf Sports Championship, held in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh from 20 to 23 June 2025.

Loma, the 25-year-old karateka from Bhutmundai village of Jagatsinghpur district, has bagged three international and more than five national medals so far. She trains at Utkal Karate School, Bhubaneswar.

Earlier three athletes from Odisha represented the country at the Summer Deaflympics. Subir Kumar Nayak (Balasore) and Roshan Patel (Rourkela) were the first two deaflympians from the State, both competing in athletics events of the 20th Deaflympics, held in Melbourne, Australia in 2005.

Badminton player Asit Mishra (Bhubaneswar) participated in the 21st Deaflympics 2009, held in Chinese Taipei. He is now serving as the president of the Odisha Sports Council of the Deaf (OSCD). Mishra and OSCD director Alok Choudhury wished Sambid and Loma all success at the Tokyo Deaflympics.

Deaflympics, previously known as World Games of the Deaf and International Silent Games, are the second oldest international multi-sports event of the world after the Olympic Games. The first Deaflympics were held in Paris, France in 2024. The 25th edition would also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics.

Over 3000 athletes from 80 countries, including India, are set to vie for medals in 18 disciplines at the Tokyo Deaflympics. India have named a 111-member contingent, which consists of 73 athletes and 38 coaches and officials. Overall, India have won a total of 56 medals, including 26 gold, 9 silver and 21 bronze so far.
