  Mens Junior Hockey World Cup: Anmol PoM; India win bronze

Odisha defender Anmol Ekka scored the fourth and last goal as India beat Argentina 4-2 in the 3rd/4th-place match to win the bronze medal in the FIH Mens Junior Hockey World Cup at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai today. Germany won the gold medal for the second successive time, defeating Spain 3-2 in the shootout after the regulation time of the final match ended in 1-1 draw.

The bronze was the first of its kind and fourth overall medal for India in the history of the Junior Hockey World Cup. India earlier won two gold medals in 2001 and 2016, and one silver in 1997. The gold medal for Germany was their eighth in the Junior World Cup and they maintained their supremacy with a total of 13 medals (8 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze).

 

Host India played the bronze-medal match after losing to defending champions Germany 1-5 in the semifinals three days back. Odisha player Anmol Ekka was the scorer of the only goal for India, who reached the semifinals with four wins in a row.

Earlier in the hard-fought quarterfinals, India edged out Belgium 4-3 in shootout after the regulation time of the match ended in a 2-2 draw. India qualified for the quarterfinals as the toppers of Group-B league, winning all of their three league matches against Chile, Oman and Switzerland.

Hockey India announced cash award of Rs 5 lakh for each player and Rs 2.5 lakh for each of the support star of the Indian team for winning the bronze medal. The 18-member India feature three players from Odisha. They were: Anmol Ekka, Rosan Kujur and Adrohit Ekka. Rohit Kullu, also from Odisha, accompanied the Indian team as an alternater player, but did not play any match.

29 Nov 2025 (League match): India (Arshdeep Singh 4-FG, 33-FG, 40-FG, Manmeet Singh 17- FG, 26-FG, 36-FG, Dilraj Singh 29-FG, 32-PC, 58-FG, Anmol Ekka 29-PC, Ajeet Yadav 34-FG, 47-PC, Gurjot Singh 39-PC, 45-FG, Thounaojam Ingalemba Luwang 43-FG, 50-PC, Shardanand Tiwari 55-PS) beat Oman 17-0. PoM: Manmeet Singh.

2 Dec 2025 (League match): India (Manmeet Singh 2-FG, 11-FG, Shardanand Tiwari 13-PC, 54-PC, Arshdeep Singh 28-FG) beat Switzerland 5-0. PoM: Shardanand Tiwari.

5 Dec 2025 (Quarterfinal): India (Rohit 45-PC, Shardanand Tiwari 48-PC) drew with Belgium (Gaspard Cornez-Massant 13-FG, Jean Cloetens 59-FG) 2-2. Shootout: India (Gurjot Singh, Ajeet Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Ankit Pal) beat Belgium (Hugo Labouchere, Guerlain Hawaux, Charles Langendries) 4-3. PoM: Prince Deep Singh (India).

7 Dec 2025 (Semifinal): India (Anmol Ekka 51-PC) lost to Germany (Lukas Kossel 14-PS, 30-PC, Titus Wex 15-FG, Jonas von Gersum 40-FG, Ben Hasbach 49-FG) 1-5.

10 Dec 2025 (Bronze medal match): India (Ankit Pal 49-PC, Manmeet Singh 52-PC, Shardanand Tiwari 57-PS, Anmol Ekka 58-PC) beat Argentina (Nicolas Rodriguez 3-PS, Santiago Fernandez 44-FG) 4-2. PoM: Anmol Ekka.
