  VH Trophy: Samal, Samantray fireworks in vain as Odisha lose

An explosive double hundred by opener Swastik Samal and century by captain Biplab Samantray went in vain as Odisha lost to Saurashtra by five wickets in their Elite Group-D opening match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy Senior Men One-Day Tournament at KSCA Cricket Ground in Alur, Karnataka today.

Put into bat, Odisha mustered an imposing total of 345 for six with Samal slamming 212 (169 balls, 4x21, 6x8) and Samantray smacking 100 (91 balls, 4x7, 6-3). But the Odisha total did not prove too big for Saurashtra to win the match as they overhauled the target with seven balls and five wickets to spare.

Sammar Gajjar hit an unbeaten 132 for Saurashtra. Debabrata Pradhan was the most successful bowler for Odisha, taking three wickets for 73 runs. Samal bagged the Player of the Match award as he became the first batter from Odisha to score a double hundred in List-A cricket.
 

As many as three Odisha players (Om T Munde, Badal Biswal and Sambit Baral) made their List-A debut in this match. Odisha will next meet Services at Alur Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru on December 26.
