  Jr National Archery: Manaswari, Odisha girls win bronze medals

Manaswari Hasdak created history when she became the first girl archer from Odisha to win a medal in individual recurve round of the 45th NTPC Junior National Archery Championship at Swami Vivekananda Athletic Stadium in Raipur, Chhattisgarh today.

Daughter of international archer-turned coach Rajesh Hasdak and Plus-Two Arts student of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Manaswari won the bronze medal, defeating Madhvi Choudhan of Uttar Pradesh 6-5 (9-8) in tie-breaker. Pranjal Tholiya (Rajasthan) and Tamanna Deshwal (Haryana) won the gold and silver medal respectively.

This was the second medal for Manaswari in the ongoing Junior National Championship. She was also part of the four-member Odisha girls recurve team that secured the bronze medal, beating Uttar Pradesh 5-1 on December 23.

 

Mamita Oram, Sunita Naik and Sabitri Patra were the other three archers of the Odisha girls team, which earlier defeated Tamil Nadu 6-0, Madhya Pradesh 6-0, but lost to Rajasthan 4-5 in the semifinals. Rajasthan bagged the gold, while the silver went to Haryana.

A 22-member squad is representing Odisha in the current championship, which is set to conclude on December 30. Over 500 archers from 30 states are participating in this championship, which was inaugurated by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.

Odisha Archery Association president Gokul Chandra Pati and secretary Sampurnananda Das congratulated the medal winners of the State.
