Irish Open Challenge Cup Billiards: Subrat wins historic title
22 Apr 2026

Leading Odisha cueist Subrat Das made history when he became the first player from the state to win a tournament outside India today. A multi-time Odisha state champion, Subrat achieved the glorious feat in the Irish Open Challenge Cup Billiards Tournament, which was held at SBI Academy of Excellence in Carlow, Ireland from April 19-22.

The title triumph assumed added significance as Subrat bounced back from a hopeless position to win the dramatic final against Indian opponentĀ  Srinu Katipogu (India) 220-200. The Odisha cueist was trailing by 100 points with nine minutes left for the one-hour title clash. Unfazed, Subrat registered two vital breaks of 60 and 40 to clinch a thrilling victory.

Earlier, Subrat won four matches in a row to seal his berth in the final. He started his campaign on an impressive note, outplaying John McIntyre (England) 200-54 with a break of 85 in the Round-32. Subrat followed it with a 200-139 win against Dom Halligan (Northern Ireland) in Round-16.

The back-to-back wins immensely boosted the confidence of the Odisha cueist, who went on to beat Peter Stanyer (Wales) 200-91 in the quarter-finals and Joe Doheny (Northern Ireland) 325-133 in the semifinals with breaks of 96 and 85.

Meanwhile, Subrat is also competing in the World Matchplay Billiards Championship from April 20 to 24 at the same venue. He will conclude his Ireland tour after participating in the all-important IBSF World Billiards Championship, scheduled to be held from April 24 to 29.
