Natl Inter-State Sr Athletics: Amiya leads Odisha to relay gold
26 Jun 2026

Ignored for individual events and given a wild-card entry only for relay event, indomitable Odisha sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick cornered glory on the third day of the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship, spearheading the State mens 4x100m relay team to gold medal at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today.

Chhattisgarh star sprinter Animesh Kujur, who represents Odisha, was not a part of the relay team that won the gold with a time of 39.92 seconds. The absence of Animesh, however, made no difference as 34-year-old Amiya guided Odisha to victory, along with teammates Sarun Payasingh, Lalu Prasad Bhoi and Dondapati Mrutyam Jayaram.

That was the only medal the host State could win on the third day of the five-day championship. But the day was made memorable by former 100m National record holder Amiya as he took a bow from his three teammates after their magnificent victory. Tamil Nadu (40.02s) and Maharashtra (40.37s) secured the silver and bronze respectively.

This was the second gold for Odisha and the host state stood sixth in the medal tally with a total of five medals, which also include one silver and two bronze. Earlier, Animesh and Jayaram secured gold and silver respectively in mens 100m dash, while Pragyan Prasanti Sahu and Jashbir Nayak claimed one bronze each in womens 100m hurdles and mens decathlon.

Though Odisha athletes featured in two more events today, their performances proved to be forgettable. Odisha 4x400m mixed relay team, comprising Swapanile Ahir, Nobal Kumar Kissan, Diptirani Sahoo and Sukhi Baskey finished sixth with a time of 3:30.15 seconds.

Odisha women 4x100m relay team, featuring Binati Behera, Sabita Toppo, Marymukta Soreng and Mausumi Roy, failed to finish the race in the absence of Olympian Srabani Nanda. This was the second event that Srabani did not compete. Earlier, she skipped the womens 200m sprint event. Hopefully, 35-year-old Srabani will be seen in action in her third and last event, which is 100m dash.
