  Indian Open Para Athletics International: Odisha secure 18 medals

An 11-member Odisha squad reaped a rich haul of 18 medals in the 8th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championship, which was held at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru from 26 to 28 May 2026. The 18 medals consisted of eight gold, six silver and four bronze.

Kamalakanta Nayak, Janaki Oram and Swastik Sahoo were leading achievers for Odisha, winning three medals each. Janaki captured two gold and one silver, while Kamalakanta claimed two gold and one bronze. Swastik secured one gold and two bronze.

Women javeline thrower Suchitra Parida was another outstanding Odisha performer, winning the gold medal with a Personal Best performance of 19.06m. Other medal winners included Mohan Sahu, Jayanti Behera, Jadunath Majhi, Jayaprakash Barik and Kunilata Barik.
 

The championship, which was organised by the Paralympic Committee of India, and approved by World Para Athletics, served as the final selection trial for the upcoming Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan.

Para Sports Association of Odisha (PSAO) congratulated all the medal winners, guide runners and coaches for their remarkable achievements. PSAO also expressed its sincere gratitude to the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha, for organising a 24-day preparatory camp at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, which was immensely helpful for the athletes.

PSAO President Kamala Kanta Rath requested the Odisha Government to provide improved hostel facilities for para athletes at Kalinga Stadium to ensure continuous growth and long-term development of Paralympic sports in Odisha.
