31 Oct 2026

Two budding talents from Odisha bagged a total of four medals in the Western Asian Youth Chess Championships, which was organised by Gujarat State Chess Association, under the aegis of All India Chess Federation, at Rajpath Club in Ahmedabad from 23 to 29 October 2026.

Candidate Master Sattwik Swain justified his reputation as a chess prodigy of Odisha, bagging three medals, including two gold in the Under-10 Open category. He secured one gold in the classical competition, scoring eight points out of a possible nine with seven wins and two draws.

Student of DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar, Sattwik claimed his second gold in the blitz event, garnering 6.5 points from seven rounds. He won six games and drew one. This is the first time that Sattwik won a gold medal in any international competition. Earlier, he accumulated seven medals, including two silver and five bronze in different international events, including FIDE World Cadets Cup & Championship.

Besides the double gold, Sattwik claimed one bronze medal in the rapid competition with six points out of a possible seven. He won five games and drew two. All three rapid medal winners finished with six points each. However, Sattwik settled for bronze on the basis of tie-break score.

Pragyan Mishra, also from Bhubaneswar, captured one bronze medal in the Under-8 Open blitz event, logging 5.5 points from seven rounds. He won five games, drew one and lost one. This is the first international medal for Pragyan, who is a student of Mothers Public School, Unit-1, Bhubaneswar.
