Gambhir lifts India with a century
29 Oct 2008

Gautam Gambhir hit an unbeaten 149, his second successive century, against australia as India foughtback from a disastrous start to finishing the opening day in a commanding position in the third Test at New Delhi today. Struggling at 27 for two inside 11 overs with two of the premier batsmen back in the pavillion, India seemed in a spot of bother before gambhir raised 130 runs with Sachin Tendulkar (68) and another unbroken 139 with VVS Laxman (54 not out) to help the hosts reach a comfortable 296 for three wickets at stumps.

Gambhir`s career-best 285-ball knock was studded with 20 boundaries and a six, while Laxman hit three fours en route to an unbeaten fifty. Earlier, Amit Mishra retained his place in the Indian side as Kumble replaced injured off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Skipper Kumble touched another milestone becoming the second most capped Indian Test player. Playing in his 132nd Test match, Kumble went past compatriot Kapil Dev who played in 131 matches between 1978 and 1994. The 38-year-old leg-spinner, who started his Test career way back in 1990 is now in the joint sixth spot with former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh in the most capped Test players` list in the world. Kumble is behind England`s Alec Stewart (133), Australian Shane Warne (145) Sachin Tendulkar (153rd), former Aussie captains Allan Border (156) and Steve waugh (168).
