GENERAL INTRODUCTION: A versatile person, Bharab Mohanty distinguished himself in the fields of social work, sports, politics, media, literature, art and culture.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS/CONTRIBUTIONS:

SPORTS:
*     Functioned as the Honorary General Secretary Orissa Olympic Association, Orissa Cricket Association; President Orissa Council of Sports; Vice-President Board of Control for Cricket in India; Vice-president of  Amature Athletic Federation of India.
*     Functioned as the secretary of Orissa Olympic Association from 16 February 1947 to 5 August 1958 and from 14 February 1960 to 23 July 1980.
*     Functioned as Organising Secretary of National Games twice.
*     Loved and respected as the architect of the Barbati Stadium, the Mecca of sports in Odisha.
*     Introduced Barabati Raffle (Lottery) to raise funds for the construction of Barabati Stadium.
*     Acted as joint-manager of Indian football team for a tour to Soviet Russia in 1955.
*     Acted as the manager of Indian football teams for the Second Asian Games in Manila in 1954.
*     Roped in hockey wizard Dhyan Chand to impart coaching at Barabati Stadium for two years and help promote the stick sport in Odisha.

ART & CULTURE:
*     Associated with various cultural organizations, including Utkal Rabindra Parishad Utkal Sahitya Samaj, Kumar Utsav Samiti.
*     He was a member of Advisory Board of Shri Aurobindo Centenary Celebrations Committee for Orissa and president Orissa State Branch of Indo-Soviet Cultural Society.

LITERATURE:
*     Writer of short languages into Oriya

MEDIA:
*     He was the first Editor of Oriya Daily `Prajatantra’ and English Daily `Eastern Times’

ACADEMICS:
*     He was a Fellow of Utkal University for a number of years and a member of the Utkal University Syndicate for sometime.


POLITICS:
*     Joined `Quit India` Movement in 1942 after resigning from Government service and was sentenced to imprisonment for four years on several grounds including sedition and conspiracy against the British Government.
*     After the split in the Indian National Congress, he became the Convener of the Cuttack District Congress Committee.
*     Functioned as the Member of Orissa Legislative Assembly from Cuttack City from 23rd March, 1971 to 3rd March, 1973.
*     Functioned as the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

OTHER NOTABLE INFORMATION:
*     Died of a massive heart attack at the Games Village during Moscow Summer Olympics on 22 July, 1980.
*     His son Debashish played first-class cricket matches for Delhi and Odisha.
