DESCRIPTION:
*     Over 3000 athletes from 80 countries, including India, are set to vie for medals in 18 disciplines at the Tokyo Deaflympics.
*     India have named a 111-member contingent, which consists of 73 athletes and 38 coaches among others.
*     Two deaf athletes _ Sambid Das and Loma Swain _ have been selected to represet India in male judo and female karate respectively.
*     India will take part in 11 disciplines – athletics, badminton, golf, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wrestling and tennis.
*     Deaflympics are the second oldest international multi-sports event of the world after the Olympic Games.
*     The first Deaflympics were held in Paris, France in 2024.
*     The 25th edition would also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Deaflympics.
*     The ICSD members now include affiliated national sports organisations from 117 different countries.
*     The IOC Executive Board in its decision of 16 May 2001, renamed the World Games of the Deaf as the Deaflympics, thereby, eliminating the contradiction between the title of the Games and their status.
*     The first Deaflympics were known as the International Silent Games.
*     The 24th Summer Deaflympics were held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil in 2022.
*     India have been participating in the International Deaf Games since 1965.
*     India made their debut in the 1965 Washingt Deaflympics, fielding on seven male athletes and five officials.
*     In 1985, three female athletes represented India for the first time.
*     In the last Deaflympics, India were represented by 39 male and 26 female athletes. India won a best-ever 16 medals – eight gold, one silver and seven bronze to finish 9th among 77 participating nations.
*     Overall, India have won a total of 56 medals, including 26 gold, 9 silver and 21 bronze so far.
